Great Volunteer Opportunity!
Friends of the Family (FOF) is seeking volunteers for their LA2050-funded Man2Man Project. Are you an adult male over 30 who would like to have a positive impact on a young man’s life as he strives to step up to fatherhood? Ideal volunteers would reside in the LA Metro area, be fathers themselves (not mandatory), be well established in their lives and careers, and be able to commit to 6 - 8 hours per month during 2017 to mentor a participant in FOF’s Young Dads program. All activities and mentor coaching will be coordinated by the agency.
The M2M Program develops vibrant communities by supporting two generations of young fathers and their children through quality mentoring relationships and by building social networks of adults committed to making life better for future generations. If you have wisdom to share and support to provide, please contact us. For more information, please contact Brenda Hillhouse, Director of Development, at 818/988-4430 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
A Lovely Surprise!
We are so happy to share this news with you, our loyal supporters!
The Goldhirsh Foundation surprised all the winners of the recent LA2050 Grant Competition by installing congratulatory bus benches for us throughout the city. There are two congratulating Friends of the Family near the agency at the intersection of Balboa Boulevard and Nordhoff Street (pictured above).
We are so proud to get this kind of public recognition and even more proud to be among the worthy organizations funded by the Goldhirsh Foundation as part of the LA2050 Grant Competition. We have no doubt that these organizations really will make LA a great place to LIVE, PLAY, CREATE, LEARN, and CONNECT by the year 2050!
We offer our most heartfelt thanks to all of you who voted for Friends of the Family in the competition!
Summer Fun in the FOF Garden
Families with children of all ages enjoyed a bountiful summer of fun this year in the FOF Garden! Thanks to the dedicated guidance of our Volunteer Garden Masters, Michelle Zarnegin and Herb Broutt, program participants planted and harvested strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins, corn, and beautiful sunflowers!
In addition to all the growing and planting, the children enjoyed arts and crafts using natural outdoor materials. They created beautiful ladybugs by painting rocks and decorated mud pies with flower petals, the kind of hands-on natural experiences with the earth that they don’t get to have on a regular basis. They tasted strawberries and tomatoes picked straight from the vine. They learned about improving the soil, the effect of water and sunlight, natural ways to keep insects away, and much more. Each and every participant said they plan to take these lessons and be gardeners for the rest of their lives!
Both Michelle and Tom said they enjoyed the opportunity to share their passion for gardening with kids and families, and we are so very grateful for their contributions to this vitally needed program in our community. If you are interested in volunteering to work in this or other FOF programs in the future, please contact the Coordinator of our Family Wellness Institute, Noemi Watanabe at email@example.com.
Melissa Joan Hart has found a new way to support Friends of the Family in an ongoing way! It’s CHIDEO – a new website that offers celebrities a way to connect with their fans AND make money for their favorite charities at the same time. FOF is so very honored to be Melissa’s favorite charity! Check it out here and spread the word to all your friends!
